New U.S. study shows assistive communication delivers 3.3x return while improving quality of life by 65%

A new U.S. study shows that high-tech assistive communication significantly improves quality of life for people with disabilities while delivering clear economic benefits to society, increasing quality of life by 65% and delivering a 3.3x return on investment.

The study,Exploring the Benefits of Assistive Communication, was commissioned by Dynavox Group and conducted by the research firm Augur in collaboration with researchers from Boston College. It examined the impact of high-tech augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) among people in the United States living with conditions such as cerebral palsy, autism, and ALS.

The findings highlight both human and economic benefits. High-tech AAC improves users’ quality of life by 65% and pays for itself more than three times over, with a return on investment of 3.3x.

For people using these devices, the benefits are both practical and personal:

• 72% feel better able to express their wishes and preferences
• 69% feel encouraged to communicate
• 63% report reduced anxiety and frustration
• 58% can communicate beyond their immediate circle
• 54% develop new skills

These improvements translate into greater independence and broader participation in daily life. More people are able to attend school or work, communicate digitally and socially, and take greater control over their environment.

Families and caregivers also see meaningful impacts. Many report fewer misunderstandings, a stronger ability to meet needs, and less worry, helping to improve not only individual outcomes, but relationships and overall quality of life.
